Church Announces Revisions to the Church Hymnbook and Children’s Songbook

[wp_ad_camp_1]

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have announced that “under the direction of the First Presidency, committees have been assembled to recommend revisions to the current hymnbook and children’s songbook. When the revisions are complete, there will only be one hymnbook and one children’s songbook, offering the same hymns and songs in all languages. The new collections will be created over the next several years to reflect the needs of members around the world.”

According to the website:

“All are encouraged to submit their original hymns, children’s songs, hymn texts, and children’s song lyrics to be considered for the new hymnbook and children’s songbook. Submissions in all languages and cultural styles will be considered for inclusion. Music should be appropriate for use in worship services. Texts must be doctrinally correct.

An online music submission tool will be used to submit original hymns, children’s songs, and lyrics. The same tool is used for the annual Church Music Submission, which also accepts arrangements, anthems, youth music, instrumental music, and texts. Hymns and children’s songs that have been submitted to the Church Music Submission in the past will need to be resubmitted using the submission tool in order to be considered for the new collections.

In order to submit, a composer or author will need to create a profile using his or her LDS Account. Anyone (member or nonmember) may obtain an LDS Account for free at ldsaccount.lds.org. Up to five hymns and five children’s songs may be submitted by an individual for consideration. Two PDF copies of each submission will be required: one with the submitter’s name and copyright information included, and another with the submitter’s name omitted (see upload information in the submission tool for details). If multiple people collaborate to create a submission, only one of them needs to submit the music. Submissions will be reviewed as they are received. Communication about selections will be sent out once the final selections have been made.

When music is selected for inclusion in the hymnbook or children’s songbook, the submitter in turn grants the Church a nonexclusive, perpetual license for unlimited use. Submitters retain the copyright for their work.

The deadline for submissions is July 1, 2019. Click here to submit your original hymns, hymn texts, children’s songs, or song lyrics.

While digital submission uploads are preferred, two hard copies of the submission may be mailed to Church music staff if necessary. However, the online profile creation and submission questions must be completed for the submission to be considered.

Submissions may be mailed to:
