The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have issued a response to the armed individuals occupying a federal building in Oregon.
While the disagreement occurring in Oregon about the use of federal lands is not a Church matter, Church leaders strongly condemn the armed seizure of the facility and are deeply troubled by the reports that those who have seized the facility suggest that they are doing so based on scriptural principles. This armed occupation can in no way be justified on a scriptural basis. We are privileged to live in a nation where conflicts with government or private groups can — and should — be settled using peaceful means, according to the laws of the land.
Federal Building
It’s has been two days since armed protesters have taken over a federal building in Oregon. The reason that the church had to issue a statement on this issue is that The Bundys, the family that is leading this siege, is a member of the church and have been quoting and citing passages in the Book of Mormon as justification for their actions.
For the past couple of days, Ammon Bundy and his brother Ryan have led a mini militia (some have estimated up to 150 fighters) to the occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge building near Burnsmmon.
